St. Joseph county residents who help fill shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child always remember to add a prayer for the child receiving their box. Usually they try to imagine what the boy or girl looks like, where the child lives and which of the box items will bring the most joy. On Saturday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m. perhaps one person may be able to actually meet their box’s recipient at Gracepoint Baptist Church in Sturgis. Of course, no one knows who placed a yellow plastic camera in Bonny Kibuuka’s shoebox years ago or where the packer lives, but Kibuuka wants to meet everyone in this area who helps with Operation Christmas Child to let them know how much their gifts are appreciated. The Southwest Michigan Operation Christmas Child team is privileged to have Bonny Kibuuka, a young man who received a shoebox full of gifts as a child in Uganda. Gracepoint Baptist is located at 26268 US-12 in Sturgis. Bonny Kibuuka was raised in a large Christian family in Uganda. One day, he was caught stealing form a store as had become his habit. Instead of reporting Bonny to the police, the store owner forgave him and asked him not to steal again. From that incident, Kibuuka learned he could be given grace he hadn't earned and became a Christian that same day. Later, Bonny received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift during a church service, another example of grace. His favorite items in his shoebox were a yellow plastic camera and stickers with Bible verses, which helped create friendships and strengthen his faith. Kibuuka came to the United States in 2014 to attend college and now lives in Lansing. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, collects shoebox gifts - filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and fun toys - and delivers them to children in need around the world to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way. For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. In 2019, the goal is to collect 35,000 shoeboxes from southwest Michigan, part of over 11 million that will be collected worldwide.
